Meet SEGUN ADEFILA “The CEO of CROWN TROUPE OF AFRICA”

Art doesn’t give rise to anything in us that isn’t already there. Its simply stirs our curious consciousness and sparks a fire that illuminates who we have always wanted to be.

I’m delight to celebrate and share the work of Arts of this renowned Artiste, one of Nigerian Legendary Artiste whose works of Arts has impacted lives and promote the Africa total theatre heritages to the world at large.

Meet Segun Adefila aka Omoekùnsunònrorò!

The roaring lion, backbone co-founder and Artistic Director / Choreographer of CROWN TROUPE OF AFRICA.

Segun Adefila is an artist of Nigerian origin. His first encounter with the arts started from his childhood in his ancient hometown of Omu Aran in Kwara State(North Central Nigeria) where as a child he danced with masquerades during traditional festivals.

This background has greatly influenced his art as a performance artist with a remarkable awareness of the potency of the arts as a veritable tool for social rejuvenation.

He had his informal training in theatre with Black Image Theatre Company after which he became a co-founder and artistic director of the Crown Troupe of Africa with a couple of friends in June 1996.
In his quest for knowledge in the arts of theatre, Segun Adefila studied for a certificate in Drama from the defunct Centre for Cultural Studies, University of Lagos in 1997 and later obtained his B.A (2.1-Second Class Upper Division) in Creative Arts from the same institution in 2002.

Segun Adefila began to gain recognition as a performer while in school winning awards at both departmental and professional levels with the Crown Troupe.

Some members of the group were invited by the National Troupe of Nigeria to perform at the maiden edition of Contacting The World, an international youth theatre festival hosted by Manchester based Contact Theatre in 2002.

This was to be the group’s first international exposure overseas.

Segun Adefila’s passion is the catalyst pivoting the dedicated talents that made up Crown Troupe.

They are keeper of the flame for the living theater….

Segun Adefila rehearsing…

I have started work and rehearsals. The flooding season is just getting here and this is when I will be able to get some of my major materials.
Victor came to our rehearsal and also visited the performance site with me.

We managed to have some preliminary recordings too. I have spoken with the residents and we are raring to go.

Mi o Ni Choice performed by Segun Adefila in the film ARUGBA.
Segun Adefila turns musician in this video.

The dreadlocked complete artiste, a combination of composer, performer, choreographer – uses cultural hip-hop but with a conscience and no doubt, a message, all too familiar.

The video is a scene from ARUGBA, a film by Tunde Kelani, starring Bukola Awoyemi.

For a writer, they say write what you know. As a performer, you find it in yourself, in your heart. You relate to the character. You try to live it, try to have it be real for you.

To be creative means to be in love with life. You can be creative only if you love life enough that you want to enhance its beauty, you want to bring a little more music to it, a little more poetry to it, a little more dance to it.

This is the world of pretend. We are artists and we are servants of the stage, and I take both jobs very seriously.

As artists, we work as a collective, all for one and one for all. As servants, we work for those who venture out alone, otherwise known as performers.

I like performing because it’s direct contact with live people. I write a good deal of the time but that’s introspective creation rather than interaction.

What a costume designer does is a cross between magic and camouflage. We create the illusion of changing the actors into what they are not. We ask the public to believe that every time they see a performer on the screen, he’s become a different person.

You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right. If you’re not passionate enough from the start, you’ll never stick it out.

I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.

Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long.
We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious…and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.

I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists.
Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.

Creativity is the key to success in the future, and primary education is where teachers can bring creativity in children at that level.

Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.

Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist. Stay focused and stay determined. Don’t look to anyone else to be your determination, have self-determination.

It will take you very far!

He will be sharing and instructing from his tremendeous insight of Knowledge, research and experience live in the gallery via the didactic Quiz Segments live at Olaijo Arts Gallery WhatsApp platform this next Teusday by 8pm Nigeria time.
